With around 20 works in film installation, photography and sound, this showcase will be Turner Contemporary’s largest film exhibition to date. Presenting a unique opportunity to see JMW Turner’s watercolours juxtaposed with Koester’s films, this exhibition contextualises the contemporary legacy of the gallery’s namesake.
Koester plays with the art of storytelling through 16mm film, sound and photography, taking you on a journey to different times, places and states of consciousness.
Central to the exhibition is a new film commission, The Other Side of the Sky. Premiered at Turner Contemporary and created especially for the exhibition, Koester’s experiential film makes the connection between Turner’s seaward journey, for which he claimed to have been bound to a ship’s mast, and later trips: internal journeys and chemical ventures of the 1960s.
