The European Mozart Dame Jane Glover in conversation Patrick Mackie

The fourth in a season of Europe House Talks organised by the European Parliament’s office in London featuring leading writers and artists discussing issues of contemporary interest with a European focus.

Please join us in person at Europe House on 11 November, from 18:30 to 20:00, for ‘The European Mozart’, where the conductor and musicologist Dame Jane Glover will be in conversation with the poet and author Patrick Mackie.

Don Giovanni, the Paris Symphony, the Prussian Quartets: the very names of Mozart’s compositions testify to his cosmopolitanism. Salzburg may now be the city most closely associated with Mozart, but he was truly a European composer, his work taking him from London to Prague and his collaborations involving musicians and librettists from across the continent.

The Europe of Mozart’s time was a place of immense change and upheaval – political social and intellectual. In ‘The European Mozart’, renowned musician and musicologist Jane Glover and author Patrick Mackie will explore how the age’s greatest composer tapped into the wider currents swirling around Enlightenment Europe to redefine how the continent made and heard music.

Jane Glover has been Music of the Baroque’s music director since 2002. She was music director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera from 1981 until 1985 and artistic director of the London Mozart Players from 1984 to 1991. From 2009 until 2016 she was Director of Opera at the Royal Academy of Music, where she is now the Felix Mendelssohn Visiting Professor. She was recently Visiting Professor of Opera at the University of Oxford. Her discography includes a series of Mozart and Haydn symphonies. She is also the author of Mozart’s Women: His Family, His Friends, His Music (2005) and Handel in London: The Making of a Genius (2018)

Patrick Mackie is a poet and author. He has published collections of poems with Carcanet and CB Editions. His most recent book is Mozart in Motion: His Work and His World in Pieces, published this autumn by Granta. He studied at the University of Oxford and the University of Manchester and was formerly a visiting fellow at Harvard.
