The Danish–British connection: on stage and screen

Roundtable discussions on Danish-British cultural exchange.

What links the Farthing Pie House in London’s Euston Road to the Tivoli Ballet Theatre in Copenhagen and Borgen on TV screens around the world? How is Ludvig Holberg, the founder of modern Danish theatre, connected to Mary Wollstonecraft? And how did Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, get from Elsinore Castle to Shakespeare’s Globe?

This two-day symposium maps out the cultural exchange between British and Danish performing arts: the mutual influences, inspirations and histories behind the stages and screens of today.

Following presentations and debate between theatre scholars and practitioners, a closing performance event showcases various aspects of the route we have followed and are still following together. The closing performance is included in symposium tickets.

Speakers and performers include (with more to be added soon): Kasper Holten, Director, The Royal Danish Theatre, former Director of Opera, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Peter Bo Bendixen, Artistic Director, along with dancers from the Tivoli Ballet Theatre; Michala Petri, internationally-renowned recorder virtuoso; Sissi Lichtenstein, International Performing Rights Ltd; Billy Barrett and Ellice Stevens, Breach Theatre; Kirsten Shepherd-Barr, Professor, Oxford University;Professor Ros Ballaster, Oxford University; Professor Kate Newey,Exeter University; Karen Skovgaard-Petersen, Director, Society for Danish Language and Literature; Ellen Gjervan, Professor, University of Trondheim; Ulla Kallenbach, Associate Professor, University of Bergen/University of Aarhus; Moira Goff, Dance historian; Gaye Kynoch, Literary translator; Bent Holm, Theatre researcher and dramaturge;  Sue Hansen-Styles and Andrew Jeffers, Why Not Theatre Company, Copenhagen
