Soso Lakatos Hungary’s Alto-Saxophonist of the Year

Sándor ‘Soso’ Lakatos, the youngest offspring of a great Roma musical dynasty is an incredibly gifted alto-saxophonist. Soso has been playing professionally since the age of 12. At 16 he was the star soloist of the Hungarian teenage band, the Next Generation which came third at the Getxo International Jazz Festival in 2003. The Next Generation also played and brought down the house at The Spitz in London. Having made his mark on the Hungarian jazz world before the age of 20, he went to Holland to further his studies where he was tutored by the world’s leading jazzmen such as Miguel Zenon, Branford Marsalis, Gerard Presencer and Brad Mehldau, just to name a few. He played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Ukraine With the famous Serbian world-jazz orchestra Soso toured Israel, Jordan and Colombia. In 2012 he won the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award for best composition. He is back in Hungary now leading his own quartet and with his brilliant, incredibly intelligent, inventive playing he is in great demand by the top bands on the Hungarian jazz scene. Soso has just been voted „Alto-Saxophonist of the Year” by the readers and critics of Hungary’s most-read jazz website, JAZZMA, which functions as a daily newspaper of the genre.

Soso will be accompanied by Gareth Williams, who has established himself as one of the UK’s leading modern jazz pianists. A fiery and creative player his remarkable talent has been seen with an impressive array of world-class artists, from Jazz/Hip Hop band “US3” through to internationally-renowned artists such as Joe Lovano, George Coleman and Dave Liebman. MD for the highly regarded UK vocalist Claire Martin, Gareth has been featured at the Club on many occasions, most notably in his regular appearances with iconic US sax star Jerry Bergonzi. Widely regarded as a pianist of international stature. “…dynamite pianist” Evening Standard; “… fantastic improviser” The Guardian. The bass player will be the incredibly talented young Misha Mullow Abbado (son of Claudio Abbado). The drums will be looked after by one of the top UK players, Chris Higginbottom.
