Loosely based on Jack London 1909 eponymous novel, Martin Eden is an impressive historical and political epic by Pietro Marcello which won lead actor Luca Marinelli the Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival. Poor sailor Martin Eden’s fate is changed forever when he defends a young boy from a beating on the docks. The boy repays him for his kindness by inviting him into his bourgeois home, and it is there that Eden meets Elena (Jessica Cressy), the daughter of an upper-crust industrial family. He resolves to elevate himself to the family’s social standing and eventually marry her, but grapples with social politics and his own humble origins.
