Film screening and Q&A: Uncertain Glory

Screening followed by a talk with Prof. Paul Preston and translator Peter Bush (in English)

Dir Agustí Villaronga. Spain, 2017, 115 min. In Catalan and Spanish with English subtitles.

The novel Incerta glòria (Uncertain Glory) by Joan Sales (1912-1983) is for many the great novel of the Spanish Civil War. His refined plot interrogates at once the conventional clash between the fronts, the revolution of the rearguard and the existential conflict caused by the war and by the affective relationships between his characters.

Incerta Glòria is also the 2017 film by Agustí Villaronga, based on the homonymous novel by Sales, which has received excellent reviews as its previous film Pa negre.

After the screening, Prof. Paul Preston and award-winning translator Peter Bush will talk about the book, the film and its historical background, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience. The event celebrates the appearance in English of El vent de la nit (Winds of the Night), the novel by Joan Sales that continues the story of the characters of Incerta glòria once the war is over. The book, also translated by Peter Bush and edited by Maclehose Press, may be acquired at the end of the event.
