Miguel de Cervantes was buried on 23 April 1616, by which time his writings had captured the English literary imagination. This lecture held by hispanist Barry Ife and illustrated by Globe actors, will explore this influence.
The first part of Don Quijote, published in Spain in 1605, was translated in English by Thomas Shelton and published in 1612. In 1613 one play nowadays lost was launched, Cardenio, by Shakespeare and Fletcher, inspired by an episode of the novel.
Hispanist Barry Ife is Principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He was before Cervantes Professor of Spanish and Acting Principal of King’s College London since 1988. He graduated from King’s with a first class degree in Spanish in 1968, and was awarded a PhD from Birkbeck College in 1984. From 1969 to 1972 he was lecturer in Spanish at Nottingham University, and from 1973-1988 was lecturer in Spanish at Birkbeck College.
