A Virtual Conference: Thomas Bernhard – Language, History, Subjectivity

This virtual international conference will focus on the works of landmark Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard, more than thirty years after his death. The conference aims to develop new readings of Bernhard’s primary texts via the three interconnected strands of language, history and subjectivity.

Conference panels will explore topics such as Bernhard’s poetics, his dramatic works, and his persona. Confirmed keynote speakers include Rüdiger Görner (Queen Mary University of London) and Manfred Mittermayer (University of Salzburg).

An online exhibition of photo-illustrations by Heiko Berner for Bernhard’s A Child will accompany the conference.

Organisers: Ernest Schonfield (University of Glasgow) and Katya Krylova (University of Aberdeen).
