Violinist Maria Gîlicel and Pianist Sten Heinoja, Lake District Music Festival

Lake District Summer Music Festival, one of the UK’s most vibrant chamber music events, welcomes Romanian musicians for the third consecutive year. For the current edition, violinist Maria Gîlicel and pianist Sten Heinoja, two very talented young musicians, propose a rich and exciting programme of works by well-known European composers. Three works with Parisian connections are interleaved with Schubert’s teenage work, modelled on the Mozart, and Tsiganov’s arrangements of Shostakovich, part of this year’s composer theme. The programme culminates in Franck’s wedding gift to fellow Belgian Eugene Ysaÿe, who performed it on the day of his nuptials.

Programme:

Mozart Violin Sonata No.21 in E minor, K304

Schubert Violin Sonatina No.1 in D, D384

Debussy Violin Sonata in G minor

Shostakovich arr Tsiganov Four preludes for violin & piano, Op.34

Franck Violin Sonata in A major

Maria Gîlicel started her violin and music studies at the age of four. She acquired her degree at the Conservatorio Adolfo Salazar in Madrid under Farid Fasla, before graduating with First Class Honours as a student of Ani Schnarch at the Royal College of Music, where she is now taking her Masters in Performance with Maciej Rakowski. Maria made her début at an early age at Madrid’s National Auditorium and has since performed in many venues, including Wigmore Hall, Buckingham Palace, Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Museo Sartorio (Trieste), Casa Tartini (Slovenia) and the Romanian Cultural Institute in London. In 2018, she performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe as part of its Academy during its tour in Italy. She also took part in the BBC Symphony Orchestra Pathway Scheme. She is a founder of the Chloé Piano Trio and the Thaleia String Quartet. Most recently she won the Tillett Trust Young Artists’ Platform and the RPS Emily Anderson Prize.

Sten Heinoja has received numerous prizes in his native Estonia as well as abroad. In 2007 he was awarded a diploma and special prize in Lithuania, in 2010 he earned the finalist diploma in Jurmala, Latvia, and in 2014 he won the 8th Estonian Piano Competition. Sten performs regularly in Estonia as part of chamber groups, as a soloist, and as an accompanist. In March 2015 Sten and violinist Linda-Anette Suss, as part of a chamber group, were granted the laureate diploma at the In Corpore competition. The duo was also awarded a prize by Eesti Raadio and a special prize for the best performance of a classical piece. As of 2015 Sten has been continuing his studies at the RCM with Vanessa Latarche on a full Masters scholarship.
