Workplace is announcing a solo presentation of Portuguese artist Hugo Canoilas‘ work at its Mayfair gallery. Drawing from history of painting and popular aesthetics and referencing myriad sources from jazz musician and composer Ornette Coleman to existential philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and Dadaísm, the works in the exhibition explore the language of painting from Modernism to the present day.
Canoilas was born in 1977 in Lisbon, Portugal and studied at Caldas da Rainha, Portugal and the Royal College of Art, UK and lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Recent exhibitions include: Spirit of the Air, Wiener Art Foundation, hosted by Kunstbuero, Vienna; Magma, Workplace Gateshead, UK. Canoilas is currently developing a major project for MNAC – Chiado Museum in Portugal opening in November this year.
