Two stories, one of a witches’ trial set in the 16th century, the other following the contemporary psychiatric evaluation of a woman being held for assault, are cleverly intertwined in this ambitious film. Continuing Bellocchio’s exploration of aesthetic form (including strong balletic dance and musical elements) and psychological drama content The Witches’ Sabbath is challenging and unique cinema.
The screening on Wed 27 June will be introduced by season curator Adrian Wootton
