Nonclassical Presents: Dan Samsa Curates

nonclassical Associate Composer Dan Samsa – alias Warsnare – curates this night of spatial soundscapes, electronic music and UK sound system culture, using the unique combination of a spatial surround sound with the sub bass scoops of a South London dub system.

Merging a state of the art 3D surround sound system with the sub scoops of the powerful, hand-built Unit 137 dub sound system, The Albany’s main space becomes – as Dan describes it – a bombardment of the physical and aural senses that destabilise the preconceptions of what can be achieved on a sound system. There’s Kamikaze Space Programme, who manoeuvres between industrial sound design, music concrete and the frenetic energy of UK and Berlin electronic music scenes for a bewildering set. Elsewhere, there’s an ambisonic sound work exploring movement and spatialisation from Luke David Harris & Henrik Oppermann.

Completing the programme is a performance from Dan himself, who showcases some of his recent experiments with 360-degree microphones. One of the pieces hears the word ‘Metamorphosis’ sung by countertenor Jonathan Darbourne, recorded 42 times at different locations in Southwark Cathedral, where Dan and Jonathan sang as a choristers in their youth. With each cycle a split second of each location is heard one after the other. Each cycle gradually shifts through the word “Metamorphosis”, we then hear the echos repeated until eventually the London city sounds that constantly penetrate the cathedral are unmasked. This process is then repeated in reverse using the upper pitch.
