Olivier Malingue has invited winner of the 2008 Prix Marcel Duchamp, Laurent Grasso, to present his one-off project The Panoptes Project, opening October 2017. Coinciding with the gallery’s first participation in Frieze Masters, Grasso takes advantage of Malingue’s extensive access to modern masters, presenting classics including Max Ernst, René Magritte and Francis Picabia alongside his original sculptures, paintings, neons and audio-visual. The Panoptes Project creates parallels between Grasso’s work and historical, academic, Surrealist, and materialist understandings of the eye.
Known for his rigorous and in-depth research projects into cross-disciplinary subjects, Grasso’s multi-faceted study into vision creates a duo-reaction for the visitor. Surrounding the viewer with an assemblage of eyes in works of different mediums and periods, the artist creates an environment wherein the visitor is both the examiner and the examined, providing an immersive and in-depth exploration into vision, perception and the gaze.
