Dr. Robert T. C. Goodwin

Instituto Cervantes presents a lecture series dedicated to great Hispanists. This edition features Dr. Robert T. C. Goodwin, in conversation with the director of the Instituto Cervantes in London, Dr. Julio Crespo McLennan.

He was born and raised in London, studied at King’s College, SOAS, UCL, Seville, and Granada. He was awarded his PhD under the supervision of Professor Sir Barry Ife, Cervantes Chair. He is the author of a wide-ranging history of the Spanish Austrias: Spain, the Center of the World, 1519-1682 (Bloomsbury, London and New York, 2015), which was translated into Spanish as España, Centro del Mundo, 1519-1682. He contributes as well to learned journals, as they were once called, on early modern Spanish colonial texts, and he has published a children’s cookery book with Candi Pérez, A Taste of Spain (Brighton, Wayland, 1994) and a biography of the first African-American, Crossing the Continent (HarperCollins, New York, 2008. He is currently working on América (New York, Bloomsbury, 2018), and writes for ABC from time to time.
