FRA | 1999 | dir. Claire Denis, with Denis Lavant, Michel Subor, Grégoire Colin
Casting unsparing but understanding eyes on a closed male world, Claire Denis’s film relocates Herman Melville’s Billy Bud to a French Foreign Legion outpost. Denis Lavant has one of his finest roles as the sergeant-major whose profound love for his commander (Michel Subor) is threatened by the presence of a kind and innocent recruit (Grégoire Colin). Beau Travail won the César for Best Cinematography (to Agnès Godard) in 2001.
Followed by a discussion with Nick Walker (Rochester Kino Cinema Club)
The film will be screened on a rare 35mm print
