Eva Jiřičná: Boundaries without Boundaries

A masterclass with Eva Jiřičná, a world-renowned architect whose far-reaching work transcends physical as well as symbolic boundaries, who will talk about her work, inspiration and the role of intuition in her creative process.

Combining a sharp conceptual approach with meticulous attention to detail and driven by her love of light and lightness, Eva’s work weaves her cherished materials of glass and metal into elegant yet functional designs that redefine the limits of architecture’s technical potential. She became well known for the interiors of shops, residential projects and glass staircases but also for her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Canada Water Bus Station, the Leicester Library, the Orangery at Prague Castle and many other projects.

Eva Jiřičná is a Czech born architect based in London since 1968. She worked on the Brighton Marina project and on the Lloyd’s Building before establishing her own practice in 1982. Following the fall of the communist regime Eva established her Czech architectural practice AI DESIGN in Prague in 1999. She has been named Ambassador of the Czech Republic by the Czech Top 100 and awarded the CBE and a Lifetime Achievement Medal by the London Design Festival.

The masterclass is part of the London Festival of Architecture and Eva Jiřičná’s ongoing retrospective exhibition at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, Czech Republic.

Eva Jiřičná, a Czech born architect based in London since 1968, was educated in Prague, qualifying as an architect at The Technical University and completing her Master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts .Caught in London by the repercussions of the soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in the summer of 1968, Eva worked on the Brighton Marina project and on the Lloyd’s Building and started her own practice in 1982. Her talent, hard work and unrelenting optimism turned her unexpected exile in the UK into successful years filled with true passion for architecture and design. Following the fall of the communist regime some 20 years later, Eva finally made it back home, generously dedicating her time to teaching and establishing her Czech architectural practice AI DESIGN in Prague in 1999, and completing many projects including hotels, university buildings, and a multipurpose auditorium. Eva has many years teaching experience and has been appointed a Professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design Prague. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, a Royal Designer for Industry, and an honorary member of the Royal Society of Arts. She has been awarded a CBE and received 11 honorary doctorates. She has recently been named an Ambassador of the Czech Republic by the Czech Top 100 and awarded a Lifetime Achievement Medal by the London Design Festival.
