De Gaulle, A Certain Idea of France

On the anniversary of De Gaulle’s London address to Free France on 18 June 1940, urging French people to resist and join him on British soil to fight on for France, we celebrate the launch of Professor Julian Jackson’s new biography, A Certain Idea of France: A Life of Charles de Gaulle (Allen Lane, 2018). He will be joined by professors Marc Olivier Baruch (EHESS), author of Le régime de Vichy: 1940-1944, and Sudhir Hazareezingh (Oxford), author of In the Shadow of the General: Modern France and the Myth of De Gaulle. They will discuss why this anniversary is marked both sides of the Channel and how De Gaulle achieved so much during the war when his resources were so astonishingly few.

Followed by a book signing

As part of the Fabric of Citizenship seminar series
