Winner of the Emerige Revelation Prize 2019, French artist Paul Heintz is interested in the image and the illusion it conveys. His projects, mostly videos and installations lead the spectator, by shifting meanings and temporality, from perceived or established reality towards a form of surrealism. Currently working on the shooting of Character, his next film based on George Orwell’s 1984 – imagined as an opportunity to meet and pay homage to the Winston Smiths of the world – Heinz will present two of his latest films and discuss his practice with Herb Shellenberger, curator and writer working between cinema and contemporary art.

It is night in Shenzhen, copyist painters tell about their daily life and their practice. Their gestures borrow as much from artistic as working-class imagination, from recent technologies as well as from classical techniques. It is another story of painting that takes shape here.

Paul Heintz graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing. Paul Heintz never ceases to remind us that the image is a construction, and that spectators, aware of the trickerie, like to abandon themselves to its scrolling. His work has been presented at FID Marseille, IFFR Rotterdam, Paris Nuit Blanche, Circulation(s).
Herb Shellenberger has curated screenings at institutions such as Arnolfini, Light Industry, Lightbox Film Center and LUX. Since 2016, he has been Programmer for Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. He has lectured on film and contemporary art at museums, universities and art spaces, and has written for publications including Art-Agenda, Art Monthly, and the Brooklyn Rail. He curated the series Independent Frames: American Experimental Animation in the 1970s + 1980s which premiered at Tate Modern and is touring internationally.
